Ronnie's opinion on studying at a University in the UK

Thinking about studying in the UK?

2022 is a remarkable year. The rising migration number illustrates that more and more people are leaving Hong Kong. They are leaving their home country for a better life. As a Hongkonger who is currently studying for an undergraduate degree in the UK, I would love to share my experience.

Generally, universities in the UK have a wider variety of subject options and fewer restrictions compared to the universities in HK. Therefore, students can make their choice based on their preferences and abilities instead of having to be concerned about the thresholds.

If you are a Hongkonger who is interested in studying aboard in the UK, you should get yourself ready at the beginning of the F.6 academic year as UCAS starts taking applications in September. Unlike JUPAS, students only need to pick 5 subjects of their choice instead of having to rank their priority on the UCAS system. To secure your place, it is recommended to choose 2 schools that you are wanted to get in but you are not meeting their mean score and 2 schools that you meet the mean score and 1 school that you can get into. In most cases, the schools stop taking applications in mid-January. However, some popular schools and subjects, like Oxford University or medical-related subjects will stop taking applications in mid-October. Soon later, students will get conditional/unconditional offers between February and June. Students are required to confirm their choices and insurance choice in mid-June.

So, what if I didn’t get a desirable offer or I decided to study aboard in the UK after HKDSE? No worries! Take me as an example, I was an undergraduate student in HK and decided to go study abroad in the UK in July. I applied in the clearing round in July via UCAS. Yet, I still got a place in a UK university successfully. It is worth bearing in mind that parents and students should do research even though you have to hire an educational consultant. As you are the only one who knows which school and course fit you the best, aren’t you?

I understand that it is not easy to step out of your comfort zone and move to a new country. Some may feel confused about what to prepare. You may find useful the following tips handy. First, you should get a personal statement to introduce yourself to the schools and get well prepared for IELTS. Then, besides the school information, it is important to take a look at the surrounding environment of the institution as the vibes of different cities may vary.
