When considering whether your child could be a great fit for grammar schools, you should also evaluate the pros and cons.

PROS 1
High Achievers: pupils attending grammar schools are surrounded by other like-minded students, who strive for academic excellence. This usually implies great GCSE results and equally impressive results during their A-levels. Also, children will be less likely to be bullied for working harder and excelling at school.

PROS 2
Quality of teaching: generally, grammar schools offer a high level of quality when it comes to teaching as they tend to encapsulate all the subjects, whereas comprehensive schools will focus more on providing good English, maths and sciences grades.

PROS 3
Facilities and academic environment: excellent facilities could be a key decision for parents to enrol their child at a grammar school. They usually offer more opportunities to children with a gift for subjects such as music and sport. They also have a stronger connection with top universities in the UK, therefore, more support will be provided when it comes to applying to these universities.

CONS 1
Higher preparation costs: tutoring children can be quite expensive, so children from wealthier families MAY stand a better chance to get being admitted into grammar schools as parents can afford to tutor.

CONS 2
The difficulty level of the 11-Plus exam: by the end of primary school, many children have not yet developed the necessary cognitive skills to take the exam. Therefore, failed attempts may resort to phycological issues in children, who may see themselves as “failures”.

REMEMBER, It is also important to remember that the academic nature of grammar schools rather than vocational. So, if your child is not showing academic signs by the end of their primary education, you may want to consider other options, perhaps secondary schools that offer more vocational courses.
